Abdominoplasty (Tummy Tuck)

About 10% of patients who undergo sleeve gastrectomy or gastric banding will ultimately require some form of skin fold surgery for excess skin.
We generally would not consider these procedures until 12 -18 months post the weight loss surgery. Dr Armstrong performs abdominoplasty from time to time on patients who are troubled by marked loose skin in the lower abdomen. It is a procedure that requires usually 1-2 nights in hospital and a few weeks of recovery post operatively.
A sizeable portion of skin and the underlying fat layer is removed and sutured back together. Usually the umbilicus (tummy button) needs to be repositioned aswell. Patients would go home with drains in place for 1-2 weeks and would be seen fairly regularly in the clinic as an outpatient.
Some complications can occur and would include wound infections, collections of fluid beneath the scar , and the small possibility of losing the skin in the tummy button region. Please view the movie below which illustrates the procedure and Dr Armstrong can discuss any queries with you in the clinic.
